Pope Francis makes a pastoral visit to L’Aquila, capital of the Italian region of Abruzzo, on August 28.

The Holy See’s press office announced the news on Saturday.

Every August 28-29 in L’Aquila, Catholics renew the solemn rite of indulgence (“perdonanza”), the perpetual perpetual forgiveness granted to believers by Pope Celestine V.

The pope’s visit will come the day after the hall of the pope to create 21 new cardinals in the Vatican, and during the August 27-29 meeting, the Holy Father asked the cardinals of the world to come together in the Vatican to contemplate the following–the publication of an apostolic constitution praising the Gospel on the reform of the Roman Curia.

Closeness to the victims of the 2009 earthquake

During the pastoral visit, the Holy Father will be accompanied by Cardinal Giuseppe Petrucci, Archbishop of L’Aquila, as well as the civil authorities.

He will visit the cathedral of the city, still destroyed after the 2009 earthquake, on a private visit and address the families of the victims, the authorities and the citizens on the ground. He will also celebrate the Divine Liturgy and recite the Angelus Prayer.

Cardinal Petrucci welcomed the news of the Holy Father’s visit.

“I convey with great joy that the Holy Father confirmed his visit to L’Aquila on August 28, on the occasion of the celebration of forgiveness,” he said in a statement.

Cardinal Petrucci said that after the founding of Perdonanza, promulgated by Celestine V, Pope Francis was the first pope to open the Holy Door after 728 years.

“The sincere and tireless waiting of the people of L’Aquila, which has lasted for centuries, has happily come to an end,” he said.

The presence of Peter’s successor, he said, “will give this event a global scope: the sacred door of Perdonanza will be opened not only to the pilgrims who will flock here in great numbers, but will be wide open to all. We wish that all peoples, especially those torn by strife and internal divisions, will be able to Cross it and rediscover the paths of solidarity and peace.

And the cardinal continued: “On behalf of our people – crucified by three devastating earthquakes and because of the epidemic,” I express my sincere thanks to Pope Francis: who once again testifies to the tenderness and tenderness of the Pope – the Father towards us!
