Rats are being trained to rescue survivors trapped during earthquakes

“Hero” mice are being trained to rescue people trapped during earthquakes as part of a unique science project.

A group of talented rodents is directed to enter affected areas using GPS tracking devices in order to locate survivors.

The mice have been trained to respond to whistling sounds, and are equipped with small backpacks as well as microphones so that people can communicate with the rescuers.

While it seems improbable, their small size makes them good places to get into danger zones where animals have never detonated a land mine before.

Glasgow-based Dr Donna Kean is working on the unique project called Hero Rats, with the non-profit organization APOPO.

The animals are to be sent to Turkey for use in the field, as the country is prone to earthquakes.

“The rats can get into the small spaces to get to the victims buried under the rubble,” Kane said. “We weren’t in a real situation yet, we had a mock location of the wreckage.”

“When we get the new backpacks, we’ll be able to listen to where we are and where the rat is, inside the wreck. We have the ability to talk to the victims through the rat.”

Speaking of the animals themselves, she added: “They can live on anything. They are very good at surviving in different environments which shows their suitability for search and rescue work.

“They are very trainable and the first stage is training them back to baseline – they respond to whistling. There is a misconception that they are dirty and unhealthy. They are well looked after with us, they are social animals.

“Hopefully it will be implemented, we have partnered with the search and rescue team in Turkey. It will be just a case, as soon as there is an earthquake, arrange transportation.

“We are the only organization working with this species, and there are other dog training organizations out there. Hopefully it will save lives, and the results are really promising.”
