Earthquake expert says part of Istanbul lies in ‘borderline of hell’

Professor Nasi Gorur, a geophysicist, described an extension of Istanbul, Turkey’s most densely populated city, as sitting “within the confines of ‘hell'” as he warned of the possibility of an earthquake in the future.

The city, badly damaged by earthquakes in 1999, is on the brink in light of repeated warnings by experts about an expected “major” earthquake of magnitude 7.0 or higher.

Gore says the area stretches from the Golden Horn to the Silivri hinterland on the European side of the city, and will suffer the most damage from tremors originating from the fault line about 9 kilometers (5.5 miles) off the coast of the Marmara Sea.
