Residents were stunned when the council said the pavement is like an “earthquake” that doesn’t need repair

Residents who live on a Bourton Street say their pavement is very cracked and appears to have been hit by an earthquake – and were dumbfounded when council heads told them it didn’t need repair. The pavement on one side of Pinewood Road, in Stabenhill, was so badly damaged that the runway broke into great pieces and the bad guys couldn’t walk over it. They say that the pavement is so dangerous that they are afraid that someone will stumble and fall.

Residents say they have to walk on the road or on the grass because the section of the pavement has become unstable. This issue was reported to Staffordshire County Council by Don Turner, whose parents live down the street. She was stunned when the highway chiefs initially told her that the authority was “unable to identify any defects that pose a safety hazard”.

Ms. Turner, her parents Erin and Derek Adams said: “It feels like an earthquake has hit it. I reported it not too long ago and got a report saying they didn’t think it was dangerous enough but they left cones behind.”

The council responded to Ms. Turner, saying: “We have examined the site presented in your report and have not been able to identify any defects that pose a safety hazard and require remedial work at this time. Although the area may be showing aesthetic signs of deterioration, the county council is not in a position to from carrying out work to address this matter.”

Another part of the same pavement is still relatively intact after it was brought back to the surface after the high-speed broadband installation. Yet another resident, Derek Adams, said the rest of the track remained forgotten.

Mr Adams told Staffordshire Live: ‘It is totally inappropriate. There is a lady next door who has had a hip replacement, what if you go and fall?’

“There are a lot of trucks, cars and garbage trucks going up on the sidewalk trying to get past the work carts parked on the road. This is hurting the sidewalk. The sidewalk outside our house was damaged again and only recently repaired.”

After Staffordshire Life contacted the council, a spokesperson for the authority said there had been some confusion about the location of the pier and that it was in fact due to be repaired.

Cabinet member David Williams for Highways and Transport said: “This year we have invested an additional £15.5m in road repairs, so we expect around 44,000 road and potholes to be fixed during 2022/23.

“In this case, it initially appeared that there was some confusion about the exact location of the reported issue. This issue has been resolved and repair work is being scheduled as soon as possible.”
