The Hero Rats Project: British researchers train rats with backpacks to slip into earthquake debris during natural disasters

Mice are currently being trained to be sent to earthquake debris in the future as part of research and training by scientists in the UK.

The rodents wear homemade mini backpacks with a microphone inside to allow rescuers from outside to talk to survivors trapped under the rubble.

The project called “Hero Rats” is led by 33-year-old research scientist from Glasgow Dr.

Earthquake rats are trained on mock earthquake debris on Saturday, June 4th.

So far, the project has already trained seven mice in a two-week period.

Communication with potential earthquake survivors is made possible on the condition that the purported communications backpacks also contain GPS-guided video equipment and location-tracking devices.

Rodents can also be sent to the field in the earthquake-prone country of Turkey where the animals can work with search and rescue teams.

Dr. Kane was based in Tanzania where she worked with APOPO, a non-profit organization under the Hero Rats Project.

Earthquake debris is fragmented pieces of building materials and personal property and rock deposits from landslides, according to the US Environmental Protection Agency (US EPA).

This is caused by shock waves generated by earthquakes and ground displacement along fault lines.

The US Environmental Agency asserts primary damage from seismic forces that cause the destruction of buildings, bridges, and other structures in the area relative to the epicenter.

On the other hand, the US Environmental Protection Agency highlights secondary damage from explosions, fires, and floods due to broken water pipes.

In Los Angeles, the so-called Northridge earthquake of 1994 triggered a massive 3 million-ton earthquake across the city of Northridge.

This came after a 6.7-magnitude earthquake destroyed a number of facilities and infrastructure, causing billions of dollars in damage.

The earthquake killed dozens and injured thousands.

The identification of the number of casualties increased, especially after city officials conducted the rubble removal operation for several months.

Survive from earthquakes

Falling under earthquake debris can be challenging because access to food and water will be close to nothing during the ordeal.

While a person can live longer in the water under normal conditions, it is different from being stuck with concrete or rocks on top.

In 2010, a man survived the rubble for 14 days after a devastating earthquake in Haiti.

The man allegedly managed to stay hydrated after a 2-gallon jug of water was found amid the wreckage, according to NBC News.

Post-earthquake efforts are focused on searching for and recovering potential survivors.

However, contact between emergency personnel and trapped individuals is generally limited.

With the unprecedented emergence of debris-trained mice, the chance of survival may increase.
