Magnitude 4.6 earthquake strikes Andaman Sea

NEW DELHI: The National Center of Seismology (NCS) announced on Sunday that an earthquake measuring 4.6 on the Richter scale occurred in the Andaman Sea today. The earthquake occurred at 2:21 pm. An earthquake of similar magnitude hit the Hindu Kush region of Afghanistan on Saturday.

Earlier today, a magnitude 5.9 and 6.2 earthquake hit the islands of Tonga and the Rat Islands, respectively.

The NCS recently released a report of earthquakes in April. She said that from April 1-30, a total of 81 earthquakes were recorded. Among them, 73 earthquakes occurred in India and its vicinity.

During this period, the majority of earthquakes within India and its vicinity were in the northern Hindu Kush (Ladakh, Himachal Pradesh, Jammu and Kashmir, Uttarakhand) in India and the Andaman and Nicobar Islands region including the Andaman Sea, the report said.

A few earthquakes of smaller magnitude have also been reported in the northern (Rohtak in Haryana), eastern (Gangam in Odisha), southern (Bijapur and Chikkabalapura in Karnatka, Nellore in Andhra Pradesh, Kollam in Kerala, Dindegol in Tamil Nadu) and central part of the country (Singrauli in MP).

The report stated that “a total of 27 earthquakes occurred within the Indian territory; of which 8 and 3 occurred in the Andaman Sea and Uttarakhand respectively during this period. The wise distribution of earthquakes occurred at the state/Utah level during the period from 01 to 30 April”.
