64 competitors from ten countries participated in the EFSA European Species Championship (cod and coal) in sea fishing, which was held in Elvesvik from 27-28 May. Seventeen boats went out to sea and the focus was on fishing for cod and coalfish and the biggest fish got the most marks.

The competition was organized by the Icelandic sector of the European Union of Marine Fishermen (EFSA), but due to the Covid pandemic, the organizing committee and the board of directors of the European Financial Supervisory Authority Iceland canceled last year’s competition.

The European Championship in the competition went to Scott Gibson of Scotland, Sivar Gumondsson came in second, and Francois Beaux of South Africa came in third. Magnús Emanúelsson came first as sea captain for Oliver SH who brought in the most fish in the competition.

The town of Alvesvik got an international feel during the competition during those days. Foreign competitors were really pleased with the conditions in lafsvík and on the moon with good fishing, helpful sea captains and all the help on the ships. Competition of this kind brings a lot of life and fun to a small community, and the townspeople have been following the competition and really enjoying it.

The Awards Ceremony was held last Saturday at the Cliff Community House and guests enjoyed the evening with good food and drink.
