The fortification of the ruins of a church in Bretre, western Slovakia, illustrates the turbulence of life in Hungary in the second half of the seventeenth century.

“The 1906 earthquake destroyed the already dilapidated church,” said Matos Sladuk of the Trnava Antiquities Board Office. He added that the church was demolished six years after the earthquake.

The Slovak Antiquities Board declared the ruined church and its surroundings in Bretre, Trnava region, a National Cultural Monument last year.

Jewish tombstones

In the area, a cemetery can still be found from the period when the church was owned by Lutherans, and later used by Catholics. Eleven tombstones have been preserved, the oldest of which date from the second half of the 19th century.

The expert concluded that “outside the fortress, there is another ancient cemetery – a Jewish cemetery – in which only two graves have been preserved,” the expert concluded.
