Earthquake hits Cornwall and it felt like a grenade was exploding

An earthquake “with the force of a grenade” was recorded in the UK during the Queen’s Jubilee Holiday.

The earthquake occurred in Constantine, near Falmouth in Cornwall.

British Geological Survey (BGS) data revealed that the earthquake occurred on Friday shortly after 7 pm.

The shallow earthquake in Constantine was only 5 km deep and had a magnitude of only 0.1.

The force of the explosion has been described as “equivalent to a grenade”.

But locals said that despite the earthquake, the ground didn’t quite move for them.

One joked: “That’s the extra weight of those tourists on the tip of Cornwall pushing us further into the sea.”

Another frustrated resident wrote: “I had more tremors when I fell out of bed.”

Often, small earthquakes in the UK are not actually felt by the general public.

But earlier this year, a powerful 5.1-magnitude earthquake awoke people in Shetland with “sounds of shaking and rarity”.

The tremors had extended to a depth of 10 km below the surface of the earth in the Norwegian Sea.

The force of the movement meant people’s windows and beds vibrated for minutes.

Ryan Thompson, who lives in Wadbester, Shetland, said he woke up to something that sounded like a “low-flying jet”.

The seventh earthquake reached Aberdeen – more than 300 miles from the epicenter.

The 5.1 earthquake may be the strongest recorded in recent months, but it still pales in comparison to the 6.1 earthquake in 1931.

Its tremors were felt throughout the British Isles as well as in Belgium and France.
