North Macedonia issue caused political earthquake in Bulgaria – EURACTIV.com

Bulgaria risks early elections after the leader of one of the four-party coalition parties announced he was leaving the government over disagreements over the European Union’s budget and the prime minister’s plans to raise a veto over North Macedonia to start EU accession talks.

“There is such a people,” former showman and leader of the populist party Slavy Trifonov, announced in a television appearance on Wednesday his departure from the coalition and the withdrawal of his four ministers from the government.

The fragile coalition in Bulgaria, led by Prime Minister Kirill Petkov, was formed half a year ago, and since then has been divided over such major issues as sending arms to Ukraine, adopting the euro, and more.

Besides Petkov’s “We Continue to Change” and Trifonov’s “There is Such a People”, the coalition includes Democratic Bulgaria, the center-right force, and the Bulgarian Socialist Party.

Despite the disagreements between the coalition partners, there seemed to be a consensus that the tense geopolitical situation required concessions.

So Trifonov’s announcement was a bombshell.

The former showman, known to be hard-line against Skopje, cited budget modernization and North Macedonia as reasons for his party’s leaving the coalition. He also harshly criticized Petkov and Deputy Prime Minister and Finance Minister Asen Vasiliev.

According to him, the ministers of “change continues” are leading the country to bankruptcy, and Petkov is committing a national treason because he is doing everything to raise the Bulgarian veto when the accession talks start in the EU in Skopje despite the consensus of parliamentarians that EU accession talks can start Only when Macedonia implements the bilateral good-neighbourly agreement.

Trifonov also said that government economic measures would only increase inflation and questioned the lack of efforts to expose corruption schemes from the previous government, asking “Where is the fight against dirty money?”

Toshko Yordanov, a senior member of the Slavic party, said there were notes from the Bulgarian Foreign Ministry regarding what Petkov had told his Western counterparts, proposing a “parallel path” that would allow for the veto to be lifted, while the outstanding issues between Skopje and Sofia would become part of an EU-supervised process. Yordanov said that such a process does not contain the slightest guarantee that the issues will be resolved.

Petkov responded with accusations that Trifonov-appointed Minister for Regional Policy Grozdan Karagov had requested 3.6 billion leva (1.8 billion euros) for road builders close to former Prime Minister Boyko Borisov. The former prime minister has been accused of stealing state funds via these companies, although no evidence has been provided.

Petkov said he was confident that the government would continue to work with the support of official deputies from Trifonov’s party.

“A minority government, in this case, is much better than a government in which they are trying to extort extra money, stop real reforms, stop legislative reforms,” the prime minister explained.

Democratic Bulgaria and the Socialist Party have announced that they will stick to the government, stating that the country does not need chaos and new elections.

The three remaining parties in the coalition will now have 109 deputies in the 240-seat parliament, meaning they are 12 deputies short of the parliamentary majority.

But Yordanov said that deputies “there is such a people” will not become traitors and will stick to the party line.

Political scientists see significant risks for early elections in the fall.

According to them, early elections are likely to be in favor of pro-Russian political forces such as “Vazrazdan” (revival) by Kostadin Kostdinov, which includes 13 deputies. Two other similar powers may enter Parliament.

Petyo Tzekov, editor of the daily Sega, wrote that the end of this alliance would restore Boyko Borisov to power and would push Kostdinov and other leaders of the pro-Russian forces to the front.
