San Jose Earthquakes Interim Principal, Alex Covello, About “Inconsistent” Chovis Lopez

San Jose Earthquakes interim head coach Alex Covelo has described Eduardo “Chovis” Lopez as “inconsistent” after his recent involvement with the team.

The player first arrived in Major League Soccer in January 2021, and joined the Earthquakes on loan from Chivas de Guadalajara. The team extended Chauves’ stay in December, renewing his contract until June 2022.

While Covelo praised the player, it’s no secret that his performances fell short in 2022. Chavez has managed to score one goal in four games this season, spending most of the time on the sidelines struggling with a previous injury.

“With Eduardo it was complicated because he had a long injury, there has to be rehab, then he goes to training and when he started to recover he felt a little pain in the same area and that’s why he was the coach,” the manager told TUDN.

Chauves missed 11 games overall, 10 due to injury and one due to a sudden relapse. But given his history with the team, the interim manager is reluctant to let the player go.

During his first year with the Western Conference team, Chauves managed to score 12 goals and make 4 assists in 32 matches. He scored three goals to win the match to secure the tenth place on the table for the side.

Chauvis’ surprise return to level will come at a perfect time for the Quakes, who had a rough start to their 2022 campaign. The team sits 13th in the West with 14 points in 14 games and a 3W-5D-6L record.

Off the field, the team is also undergoing a structural change following the sacking of coach Matias Almeida in April. Since then, former Earthquakes 2 head coach Alex Covelo has taken charge.
