BNPB chief visits Mamogo to review 5.8 million-meter earthquake mitigation efforts
Jakarta (Antara) – Head of the National Disaster Mitigation Agency (BNPB) Lieutenant-General Suhariyanto visited Mamugo District, West Sulawesi Province Thursday morning to ensure that the emergency response to the earthquake that struck on Wednesday afternoon was going well.
A 5.8-magnitude earthquake struck on Wednesday (June 8) at 2:32 p.m. Central Indonesia Standard Time (WITA, which is UTC+8) at the coordinates of 2.77 degrees south and 118.56 degrees east longitude.
According to a statement received here on Thursday, the BNPB chief is scheduled to hold a meeting with the West Sulawesi provincial government at the governor’s office for a coordination meeting on accelerating disaster mitigation efforts.
After the meeting, he visits the affected sites to obtain direct information on the supplies needed during the emergency period.
Suharyanto is also set to disburse ready-to-use funding and logistical assistance to the county government.
According to the website of the Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG), the earthquake was sensed at Modified Mercalli Intensity (MMI) V in South Sulawesi Province in Mamogo District and MMI IV in Majeni District.
In addition, MMI III shocks were felt in South Sulawesi Province in Pinrang District, while MMI II shocks were felt in Makassar City, Palopo City and Masamba Sub-district.
About 7,650 residents of Majin district have sought shelter due to the disaster. They set up refugee tents in several locations, such as the courtyard of the Dekeng Mosque and the Kota Tinggi Vocational Secondary School.
Meanwhile, people in Mamogo district were evacuated to Mamogo district chief’s office, local office of state-owned TVI TV, as well as Mamogo Stadium.
Meanwhile, based on data from the Provincial Disaster Mitigation Agency (BPBD) in West Sulawesi Province, up to 17 residents were injured by debris falling from a building.
The victims are currently receiving intensive treatment at Mamuju Hospital, Hyangkara.
