The new US ambassador appointed to Bulgaria is named – Sophia Globe

US President Joe Biden has nominated career diplomat Kenneth Merten to be the next US ambassador to Bulgaria, according to an announcement on the White House’s official website on June 8.

Merten was born in St. Louis, Missouri, but moved to Hudson, Ohio when he was 12, and calls Hudson his home

Merten holds a Bachelor’s degree from the University of Miami in Ohio, and a Master’s in Public Administration from the American University in Washington, DC. He studied at the University of DX Marseille in France and at the Karl-Franzens University in Austria

In 1987, Merten joined the diplomatic corps of the United States.[[[[[

Twice, he was the US ambassador to Croatia, from 2012 to August 2015, and before that he was the US ambassador to Haiti from 2009 to July 2012.

He also served as Deputy Executive Secretary to US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton and earlier to US Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice.

Received the 2011 Ryan C. Crocker Award for Outstanding Leadership in Exploratory Diplomacy for his exceptional leadership in the aftermath of the 2010 Haiti earthquake.

While serving as Ambassador to Haiti, Merten oversaw the efforts of the United States government on the ground to provide immediate post-earthquake relief by the presence of 8,000 US military personnel as well as hundreds of other professionals from many other US government agencies including the United States. In the days after the earthquake, he also oversaw the largest evacuation of American citizens since World War II.

Merten served as Senior Deputy Assistant Secretary in the Office of Global Talent Management, Office of the Managing Director, from January 20, 2021 to October 27, 2021.

His overseas assignments include the US Embassy in Paris, the US Mission to the European Union in Brussels, the US Embassy in Bonn at the time of German unification, and three tours of the US Embassy in Port-au-Prince, Haiti.

Merten’s Washington experience includes two assignments at the State Department’s Operations Center, which responds to unfolding international emergencies, ensures that senior State Department officials are kept informed of urgent events, and supports the Secretary of State’s day-to-day work and travel.

He also worked in the Bureau of Economic and Commercial Affairs and in the Cuba office, and worked for the Special Advisers of Haiti in 1993-1994.

Merten’s appointment as US ambassador to Sofia is subject to confirmation by the US Senate following a hearing by the Committee on Foreign Affairs.
