Batgirl’s forgotten daughter changed everything about her

One of DC Comics’ most controversial storylines centered around future batgirl Stephanie Brown, whose teenage pregnancy disrupted her life.

Stephanie Brown is currently roaming the streets of Gotham City as Batgirl, but during her tenure as a spoiler, she was at the center of one of DC’s most controversial events when she became pregnant at just 15 years old.

Batman: Cataclysm was a bat family crossover event that ran throughout 1998 and dealt with the aftermath of a 7.6 magnitude earthquake that destroyed Gotham City. In the lead up to this event, Stephanie is dating a man named Dean; However, when the earthquake hits, he left town and deserted Stephanie. Soon, Stephanie Brown begins dating Robin (although she still doesn’t know his true identity as Tim Drake), and the two do their best to control crime in earthquake-ravaged Gotham. A few months after the earthquake, Stephanie begins to feel ill, and the cause of her sudden weakness surprises her.

In Robin #58, written by Chuck Dixon with art by Staz Johnson and Stan Woch, Stephanie Brown tells Robin that she is pregnant. Robin is shocked, but once Stephanie makes it clear that the baby is not his, he decides that he will stay by her side throughout the pregnancy. Stephanie and her mother visit Gotham County Social Services and a private adoption agency to evaluate her options, but eventually finish up adopting through a hospital. Until the end of her pregnancy, Stephanie hesitates about whether or not she should keep the baby or continue with the adoption process. However, when she is under general anesthesia for a caesarean section, Stephanie imagines her father, a clomaster, returning to take her baby away; The situation turns into chaos when Batman and Robin arrive, and Stephanie’s innocent child is dumped on a battlefield. Stephanie realizes that her child will not be safe with her due to her lifestyle, and continues the adoption process, although she is visibly sad.

It was a bold choice by DC to tackle a hot topic like teenage pregnancy in one of its most popular series, but it was ultimately a good decision for Stephanie’s character. Stephanie Brown has previously been portrayed as a stubborn, hot, and inexperienced teen. Throughout her pregnancy, she has shown real maturity in her decision making and how she handles herself in an imperfect situation. It was a real stepping stone toward growth for her, and although Spoiler maintained her light-hearted demeanor going forward, her character gained subtle wisdom that wasn’t there before.

Unfortunately, DC has since forgotten about the revolutionary Stephanie’s teen pregnancy. The last mention of Stephanie’s daughter was by Batman in 2004’s Batman #633, when he promised Stephanie on her deathbed that her daughter wouldn’t want her for nothing. The new 52 reboot started from scratch with Stephanie’s backstory, and so far, no mention is made of Stephanie’s daughter Stephanie in Rebirth or Infinite Frontier. Taking away an experience that was so important to Stephanie Brown’s character prior to the reboot diminishes her character’s development and takes a heavy toll on her. Choosing to erase such a pivotal event in Batgirl’s life and general comic history was a poor move on the part of DC.
