Indian Institute of Technology, Delhi (IIT-D) researchers have designed low-cost, ultra-flexible, torsion-constrained trusses designed to enhance the earthquake resistance of built structures. IIT-D officials stated that the researchers have applied for a patent on their design. According to them, the trusses have many advantages, such as all-steel components, on-site manufacturing, assembly process, post-quake inspection and easy replacement.

Officials have also explained that “Seismic resistance in civil structures is often improved by the use of seismic force counteracting systems or vibration control devices. Interlocking restrained braces are the special structural elements that serve both purposes. (BRB) is a structural support in a building, designed To allow the building to withstand periodic lateral loads, typically earthquake loading,” according to a PTI report.

Deepti Ranjan Sahu, Professor at IIT Delhi Department of Civil Engineering, said, “The proposed technology is effective in new construction and has great potential for upgrading and retrofitting seismically defective reinforced concrete (RC) and steel-framed structures, such as residential buildings, office buildings, hospitals and school buildings. We have filed a patent for this technology. These brackets can also be easily used in steel and concrete bridges to enhance their earthquake resistance.”

“Implementing this technology in existing structures reduces the overall retrofit cost and reduces interference and downtime. It is possible to design a structure to achieve desired performance goals in terms of strength and serviceability using torsion-constrained hybrid brackets,” he added. The professor explained that the researchers have manufactured torsion-restricted hybrid bows (HBRBs) that have higher strength, excellent ductility and better power dissipation potential, according to a PTI report.

“The researchers made the brackets and studied the seismic performance of more than a dozen HBRBs on a large scale at the IIT Heavy Structures Laboratory Comprehensive Test Facility at IIT Delhi. Tests are conducted on samples with improvements and modifications in the laboratory,” Sahho said.
