The earth shook for some…

If you notice your lampshades doing a bit of wiggling (not sticking) this morning around 10am, there’s a good reason for it. An earthquake measuring 5.3 on the Richter scale struck the Persian Gulf from its epicenter 22 kilometers off the coast of the Iranian island of Kish.

There is no cause for concern of course, a 5.3 tremor is just a tremor on the Richter scale (the scale that measures the intensity of seismic waves). At this kind of force, and the distance of the United Arab Emirates from the epicenter, it hardly replaces the energy, in fact the vibration will be imperceptible to many. In general, seismologists tend only to worry about earthquakes of magnitude six and above, and this is the stage when damage to infrastructure and buildings can occur within the immediate vicinity.

Why did an earthquake happen?

We know that geography lessons about fault lines and plate tectonics are fresh in your mind and ready for your pub quiz, so we won’t fill you in on the basics. But Iran is the meeting point of many major plates – the Iranian plate connects with the Indian plate, the Eurasian plate, and the Arabian plate, giving rise to a patchwork network of fault lines and significant tectonic activity.

This means that earthquakes (and to some extent, volcanic eruptions) are relatively common in Iran, and while they are relatively small most of the time – there were some beasts in the past. In fact, it is estimated that around 126,000 deaths from earthquakes have occurred in Iran since 1900.

And we only have to look back to 2017, Kermanshah, to see the kinds of devastation that can be reaped from the earthquake. The death toll from the 7.3-magnitude event was 630. Still, in recent living memory, after surveying the fallout from the infamous 2003 Bam earthquake in Iran’s southeastern Kerman province, the authorities recorded the final figure of at least 30,000 dead.
