7 earthquakes strike off the Iranian coast; No damage reported

Dubai, United Arab Emirates (AFP) – Seven earthquakes off the island of Kish in southern Iran on Wednesday shook Dubai and other areas across the Persian Gulf.

Six quakes of magnitude 4 and one of magnitude 5.3 struck off the island near the strategic Strait of Hormuz, the US Geological Survey said.

Iranian state television reported that authorities deployed rescue teams in the town of Jannah in Hormozgan province, although no damage or injuries were initially reported. Jannah is located about 1,080 kilometers (670 miles) south of the capital, Tehran.

In the United Arab Emirates, home to Dubai and Abu Dhabi, the National Center of Meteorology acknowledged that the quake was felt by residents without any impact. Similarly, the Qatar Seismic Information Center said residents felt the strength of a 5.3-magnitude earthquake without any impact on the country.

Iran lies on large seismic faults and experiences an average of one earthquake per day. In 2003, a 6.6-magnitude earthquake flattened the historic city of Bam, killing 26,000 people. A magnitude 7 earthquake struck western Iran in 2017, killing more than 600 people and injuring more than 9,000.
