China bans Tibetans helping earthquake survivors in Sichuan – Radio Free Asia

Radio Free Asia has learned that Chinese authorities in the quake-hit Sichuan region are asking Tibetans to provide support for survivors to return home, saying their help is no longer necessary.

More than 25,000 residents of Barkham (Mercang, in Chinese), a county-level city in Ngapa (Aba) Tibetan and Qiang Autonomous Region, were displaced when a 6.0-magnitude earthquake struck the region on June 10.

Government rescuers did not reach the affected area until Monday. Meanwhile, Tibetans living in nearby areas offered immediate help, with monks and townspeople providing food, clothing and temporary shelter in tents for those whose homes had been destroyed, local sources said.

After the arrival of Chinese rescue teams on June 13, Tibetans offering aid were asked to leave, a Tibetan resident in the region told Radio Free Asia on Wednesday.

A Radio Free Asia source said, speaking on condition of anonymity in order to speak freely.

“However, the timely assistance they provided to the survivors was a great help,” the source said.

Updated figures for the victims were not immediately available. However, on June 10, Chinese state media reported that one resident was injured in the earthquake, and 25,790 survivors were relocated and resettled.

Meanwhile, the Chinese authorities have imposed a strict crackdown on the information received from Barkham, with residents being prevented from publishing reports, photos or any other information about the earthquake, which destroyed homes, towers and monks’ homes, a source told Radio Free Asia in an earlier report, also declining to mention its name.

Earthquakes are common on the Tibetan plateau, where a 7.3-magnitude earthquake last year hit Qinghai’s Matui (Madu) county, killing 20 and injuring 300. Authorities similarly banned social media reports at the time, asking citizens to report injuries and deaths only to The government rather than share information online, Radio Free Asia said in earlier reports.
