Magnitude 5.6 earthquake strikes off Oregon coast

The Richter scale is the way scientists and geologists measure earthquakes, and it ranges from 0 to 9.

The US Geological Survey reported the tremors early Wednesday morning.

A streak of rumble, about 274 miles off the coast of Newport, Oregon, tracked by geologists between 2:54 and about 7 a.m. The largest of them scored 5.6 on the Richter scale, which is just below what is considered a dangerous stage of 6 and above.

Every year dozens of medium-range earthquakes occur across the Earth, but perhaps this one gets additional attention because of the Cascadia Subfault.
