The United States Geological Survey (USGS) reported that several small earthquakes struck off the coast of Oregon on Wednesday morning, June 15th.

Eight earthquakes, with a magnitude of 3.8 to 5.6, shook under the Pacific Ocean west of Newport and Coos Bay.

No tsunami warnings were issued.

State geologists said the earthquakes occurred in an area where similar small tremors have occurred over the past several years.

In early December 2021, approximately 90 tremors were recorded approximately 200 to 300 miles west of the Newport-Cose Bay area and about 10 kilometers deep, according to the Oregon Office of Emergency Management (OMI).

The depth of the June 15 earthquakes was also reported to be 10 kilometres.

“The Pacific plate is overtaking the Juan de Fuca plate and this causes fairly frequent small earthquakes,” she said. “We are in a time of increased activity, but these earthquakes do not pose a risk to the people of Oregon. The earthquake zone is very far from the Cascadia Subduction Zone, so there are no increased risks from a Cascadia event.
