Residents of the UAE felt one of the seven earthquakes that rocked Iran on Wednesday. The National Center of Meteorology said the earthquakes had no impact on the UAE.

The first 5.9-magnitude earthquake hit southern Iran at 10.06 am, according to the NCM. Dozens of Dubai residents have taken to social media to report how they felt the earthquake. One resident said the lights in his apartment flickered, while another said he went down eight flights of stairs after feeling the quake.

There were no reports of damage or evacuation.

The second earthquake was more moderate, with a magnitude of 4.3. The tremors were recorded at 3.50pm, and tremors from the second quake were also felt by residents, the NCM confirmed in a social media post.

Earthquakes off the southern Iranian island of Kish hit other regions in the Persian Gulf, including Saudi Arabia, Bahrain and Qatar.

Quoting Iranian state television, an Associated Press report said that authorities had deployed rescue teams in the town of Jannah in Hormozgan province, although no human or material losses were reported. The province is located about 1,080 km south of the capital, Tehran.

This is the second time that the UAE has felt earthquakes this year. When a 5.0-magnitude earthquake struck southern Iran in March, earthquakes lasting several seconds were felt by residents.

In November last year, double earthquakes in Iran hit the Emirates, where some buildings were evacuated for the safety of residents.

Small earthquakes are common in the UAE. Last year, an earthquake expert told the Khaleej Times that the UAE experiences up to three minor earthquakes every year, but “they have no impact on the nation and there is nothing to worry about.”
