Seismologist: Oregon earthquakes are no harbinger of ‘big quake’

You can take a breath of relief – the earthquakes in the Pacific Ocean off the coast of Oregon this week are no precursor to “Big One.”

Several earthquakes struck waters a few hundred miles west of Newport, Ore early Wednesday morning, with magnitudes ranging from 3.8 to 5.6.

Tobin said the earthquakes were along the Blanco Transformation Fault between the Juan de Fuca Plate and the Pacific Plate.

“I wouldn’t see these earthquakes as any kind of warning sign or harbinger of something we should be more concerned about near shore,” he said. “That’s kind of business as usual for Pacific plate tectonics.”

However, Tobin said these small earthquakes are a good reminder to prepare for this larger one. There is a 15% chance that “Big One” will happen in the next 50 years.

“Any earthquake offshore is just a reminder that we know there is a potential for a very large and destructive earthquake with a tsunami coming from the offshore part of the Pacific Northwest,” Tobin said. “It’s not about whether it’s just about when that happens.”

Tobin said the biggest earthquake mistake people make in Puget Sound is not ensuring their homes are in good condition to withstand a major earthquake, for example, retrofitting older homes. He also noted that local governments need to make upgrades to buildings such as schools.

It’s also a good idea for individual families to have a small bag of food, water, and supplies on hand, as well as a plan for where family members will meet in the event of a disaster. Tobin’s motto is, “Get ready, don’t despair.”
