California Rail Tests Using Earthquake Alerts to Stop Trains

Los Angeles (AFP) – A Southern California regional commuter rail service said Thursday it is testing technology that will use the West Coast Earthquake Early Warning System to automatically slow or stop trains before they start shaking.

The five-county Metrolink system said the technology is a development of an earlier version published in September 2021 that sends automated messages asking train crews to slow down or stop but does not have automated brakes.

The new technology is an interface between earthquake warnings from the ShakeAlert system and a system called Positive Train Control designed to prevent train-to-train collisions, derailments due to excessive speed and other dangerous situations.

“The combination of ShakeAlert and PTC is a true game-changer for Metrolink,” Rail CEO Darren Keitel said in a statement.

ShakeAlert, operated by the USGS, universities and other partners, uses a sensor network to detect the start of a major earthquake and send alerts to the affected area before the shaking arrives so people and systems can take precautions.

The system’s coverage area includes California, Oregon, and Washington.

Positive Train Control uses GPS, radio, and computers to monitor train locations and speeds. It is designed to reduce accidents involving human error by automatically braking.

In addition to stopping trains that could collide or go too fast, the system can prevent trains from entering maintained tracks or heading in the wrong direction due to diversion errors.

Metrolink said the new technology is being tested on its route between the cities of Riverside and Peres, about 50 miles (80 kilometers) east of Los Angeles.

Metrolink operates 538 miles (866 kilometers) of track in Los Angeles, Orange, Riverside, San Bernardino and Ventura counties. It had 12 million annual residences before the COVID-19 pandemic.
