TOKYO (Reuters) – Japan’s Supreme Court said on Friday the Japanese government is not responsible for damages claimed by people whose lives were devastated by the Fukushima nuclear disaster, the first such ruling in a series of similarities. cases.

A massive tsunami triggered by a 9.0-magnitude earthquake off the northeastern coast of Japan on March 11, 2011 struck the Fukushima Daiichi power plant in Tokyo to cause the worst nuclear disaster since Chernobyl, forcing hundreds of thousands to flee their homes.

Prosecutors have claimed damages from both Tepco and the country in several class action lawsuits, and in March the Supreme Court upheld an order requiring Tepco to pay 1.4 billion yen in damages to about 3,700 people.
