UN humanitarian leaders call for renewal of approval for cross-border aid to northwestern Syria
In less than a month, a Security Council resolution allowing the United Nations and our implementing partners to provide humanitarian aid that saves lives in northwestern Syria on the other side of the border with Turkey expires.
The 15-member Security Council will decide whether to renew it or not.
The decision is crucial to the lives and well-being of 4.1 million people trapped in northwestern Syria, which is not controlled by the government. Many rely on humanitarian aid to survive, especially people who have been displaced. About 80% of the needy are women and children. More than 3.2 million people do not have enough food and need food assistance.
Our priority and only goal is to get humanitarian aid to families in need the safest, most direct, and most effective way, away from political calculations or plans. Last year alone, critical assistance from the UN and our partners crossed the border into northwestern Syria, helping and protecting 2.4 million people each month.
Over the past year, we have managed to send convoys from Syrian government-controlled areas across internal front lines to northwestern Syria with food, health, food and education for more than 40,000 people. That is a welcome improvement and we continue to increase those deliveries. However, much more is needed.
In addition to the important assistance provided through convoys, affected people also need comprehensive access to basic services.
We call on the members of the Security Council to renew UN Security Council Resolution 2585, which authorizes the continuation of cross-border assistance for an additional 12 months. We must also ensure regular access to northwestern Syria from government-controlled areas. We need to increase the number of humanitarian aid channels and maximize the humanitarian approach.
Failure to renew the resolution will have dire humanitarian consequences. This will immediately disrupt a UN rescue operation, pushing people into northwestern Syria into deeper misery and threatening their access to food, medical care, clean water, shelter and protection from the gender-based violence currently offered by UN-backed operations.
Over the years, funding for this rescue operation has dwindled. Amid other critical global crises, we call for predictable funds to support the delivery of aid to northwestern Syria.
The lives of millions of people depend on it.
We are counting on the members of the Security Council to enable us to continue our vital work. The Syrian people will count on them to make the right choice.
