5.2-magnitude earthquake strikes Ishikawa Prefecture, Japan

An earthquake measuring 5.2 on the Richter scale jolted Ishikawa Prefecture in eastern Japan on Sunday, according to the Japan Meteorological Agency on Sunday.

The quake occurred around 06:08 GMT and measured 5.2 on the Japanese seismic scale, the agency said, adding that the quake occurred in waters off the coast near the city of Suzu at a depth of about 6.2 miles.

The agency said there was no threat of a tsunami, despite their large scale.

Japanese broadcaster NHK reported that in the aftermath of the earthquake, a collection and response headquarters belonging to the Japanese Prime Minister’s Office have been set up.

There were no immediate reports of injuries or damage due to the quake.

The earthquake hit Noto District, Ishikawa Prefecture, shortly after 3 p.m. Sunday. No tsunami warning was issued. The earthquake registered less than 6 on the Japanese seismic intensity scale of 0 to 7 in Suzu.

The town of Noto scored below 5, and Wajima City scored 4. The Japan Meteorological Agency says the earthquake was at a depth of about 10 kilometers.

The Kasuga Shrine in Suzu reported that the stone torii gate broke from below, and the lanterns and stone stairs partially collapsed. The city recorded a five-magnitude earthquake in September last year.

Prime Minister Kishida Fumio said the government has set up a task force in his office.

Kishida said, “I have instructed task force members to immediately assess the extent of the damage, provide accurate information to the public, and make comprehensive efforts to take emergency measures against disasters.

No major damage has been reported so far. There were no reports of damage to the Shika Nuclear Power Plant and nearby nuclear power plants. We will continue to take all possible measures with the utmost caution.” – Agencies
