Northern Star subway operations hit the earthquake

The state’s Department of Mines confirmed that the operations of Northern Star Resources in the underground gold mine in Kanona Bell in Western Australia were affected by an earthquake.

Ground fall was identified and all personnel were evacuated from underground works.

There were no staff working in the area at the time of the earthquake.

The Department of Mines, Industry and Safety Regulation for Western Australia (DMIRS) reported that the Northern Star published a seismic response action plan for the site.

According to a DMIRS spokesperson, all affected areas remain isolated pending geotechnical inspection.

He said: “The mine operator will inform the management of the result of its investigation.”

The administration has continued to work with the Kanowna Belle site operations team and will send safety inspectors to visit the mine this week.

The Canuna Bell Mine is located about 18 kilometers northeast of Kalgoorlie. Purchased from Barrick Gold in 2014.

The Northern Star employs approximately 1,230 people across three mining areas in Kalgoorlie Operations, which includes Kanona Bell, Southern Kalgoorlie Operations and the Greater Condana Region.

The Kanona package surrounding the mine stretches across 223 square kilometers of possession.
