A 3.9-magnitude earthquake was felt early Saturday across parts of Georgia and South Carolina

STILLMORE, GA (AP) – On Saturday, a wide area felt the strongest earthquake to hit Georgia in years.

The US Geological Survey reported that the 3.9-magnitude earthquake, which struck shortly after 4 a.m., had its epicenter east of Stillmore, a town between Macon and Savannah. Several people reported shivering in most parts of Georgia and South Carolina, including Atlanta and Columbia, South Carolina.

There were no reports of damage or injuries. Earthquakes must be of magnitude 5 or greater before they can cause damage. Each one point increment on the scale represents an earthquake 32 times stronger.

The only more powerful earthquakes in the region in recent years have been the 4.4-magnitude earthquake near Decatur, Tennessee, in December 2018 and the 4.1-magnitude earthquake near Edgefield, South Carolina, in February 2014.

Earthquakes occur infrequently in most of North America east of the Rocky Mountains. An earthquake in Charleston, South Carolina in 1886 damaged about 2,000 buildings and killed 60 people. Recent estimates put its size between 6.9 and 7.3.

An area in South Carolina around Columbia has had 31 earthquakes and smaller aftershocks since December 27.
