Possibility of aftershocks after Hualien earthquake

Taipei, June 20 (CNA) Aftershocks are likely in the coming days after the 6.0-magnitude earthquake in Hualien County on Monday morning was felt by residents of Taiwan, according to an official with the Central Meteorological Bureau (CWB).

Aftershocks of magnitude 5 or higher could occur within the next two days, while aftershocks of magnitude 4 or higher could occur in the next week, said Chen Kuo Chang (陳國昌), head of the CWB’s Seismological Center.

According to the Hualien Provincial Bureau, the epicenter of Monday’s 9:05 a.m. quake was located in Guangfu Town, 37.7 kilometers south-southwest of Hualien County Hall, at a relatively shallow depth of 6.8 kilometers.

Chen said that although the earthquake occurred within the eastern rift valley fault zone in Taiwan, it occurred along the top of the Guangfu fault, with only two magnitude-6 earthquakes recorded since 1990.

That inactivity would have allowed energy to build up, he said, and likely contributed to the strength and duration of Monday’s earthquake, which measured double -5 in Hualien on the seven-tier Taiwanese intensity scale.

Chen added that the CWB is still investigating whether the earthquake is directly related to the Guangfu fault, which is not listed as one of the 36 active fault lines in Taiwan.

So far this year, Taiwan has recorded six earthquakes of magnitude 6 or more, making it well above the average of two or three earthquakes each year, according to Chen.

He said two of those were identified as following from the 6.7-magnitude earthquake that struck off the coast of Hualien on March 23.

He added that Taiwan recorded a record 13 earthquakes of magnitude 6 in 1999, followed by many more in the wake of the deadly 7.7 earthquake that hit the country on September 21.
