Hurricanes, earthquakes and all kinds of elements | Sports

San Jose Earthquakes, Seattle Storm, Calgary Flames, Colorado Avalanche and Iowa hurricanes. These are some of the teams named after natural weather disasters.

There has never been a standardized way for teams to earn their titles. For some teams, the decision of the team name comes down to fan voting and submissions. Other times, it comes down to board decisions.

Sometimes the nickname has something to do with the franchise location. The Oilers is a pseudonym chosen by Houston, again before the concession was transferred and renamed the Tennessee Titans, and Edmonton, two cities with a history of oil. The Philadelphia 76ers are named after the year 1776 when the Declaration of Independence was signed by that city’s Founding Fathers.

Other times, a nickname was chosen to sound cool: Seattle with the Kraken and Pittsburgh with the Penguins and Pirates.

But despite these names, it is relatively harmless outside the sports world.

However, somewhere along the way in North American sports, teams and organizations have decided that natural disasters are a good way to go. People will root a difference with these names.

This year’s Stanley Cup playoff is between the Colorado Avalanche and Tampa Bay Lightning. The biggest prize in all organized hockey is played with things that blow out power lines, cause wildfires, bury people, and generally cause havoc among us humans.

But there are names that are relatively harmless in the world of sports. The Oklahoma City Thunder and Miami Heat titles don’t directly invoke natural disasters. Aside from a few restless pets during thunder and some uncomfortable days with the heat, there aren’t many ways a natural disaster picture can be summoned.

Some of these disasters mean different things to different people. Idahoans aren’t worried about hurricanes or tornadoes (maybe dust devils or micropoms), but someone who lives in Florida might prepare and live anxiously during hurricane season. Someone in San Jose may not be worried about tornadoes, but they can eat dinner with their family and look up and see the chandelier shake and feel the ground moving in an earthquake.

But the names in and of themselves are harmless. Nobody is inspired by their favorite teams to create natural disasters.

But the California team cheers for earthquakes, North and South Carolina residents cheer for hurricanes or for a fan in Iowa, a state in the middle of Tornado Alley, cheering for Cyclones is a private label that is not ordinary and can only be dedicated to sports.

Maybe that’s the point. Sports is a way of escape for many people. Sitting on the sofa, turning on the TV, and watching a few football matches on a Monday night after a long day at work is a routine that many people follow.

And having those team logos and images in your head when you call out the name of a natural disaster can be a form of escape too. In the face of a hurricane, it probably helps a lot of people that the first image that pops into their heads when the word is mentioned is the classic orange and aqua green “U” from the University of Miami.

When going skiing or snowboarding, it might be a lot easier to think of an avalanche than to picture the Colorado “A” associated with the Stanley Cup hockey team they are currently on.

But it’s a strange industry when “Seahawks” and “Pelicans” are considered regular nicknames. All that said, “tsunami” or “waves” would definitely be a better nickname instead of “kraken”.

View photos The advantages of comparing online car insurance quotes are the following: Online quotes can be obtained from anywhere and at any time. Unlike physical insurance agencies, websites don't have a specific schedule and they are available at any time. Drivers that have busy working schedules, can compare quotes from anywhere and at any time, even at midnight. Multiple choices. Almost all insurance providers, no matter if they are well-known brands or just local insurers, have an online presence. Online quotes will allow policyholders the chance to discover multiple insurance companies and check their prices. Drivers are no longer required to get quotes from just a few known insurance companies. Also, local and regional insurers can provide lower insurance rates for the same services. Accurate insurance estimates. Online quotes can only be accurate if the customers provide accurate and real info about their car models and driving history. Lying about past driving incidents can make the price estimates to be lower, but when dealing with an insurance company lying to them is useless. Usually, insurance companies will do research about a potential customer before granting him coverage. Online quotes can be sorted easily. Although drivers are recommended to not choose a policy just based on its price, drivers can easily sort quotes by insurance price. Using brokerage websites will allow drivers to get quotes from multiple insurers, thus making the comparison faster and easier.
