Experts warn that earthquakes in Ishikawa may continue for months
Seismologists have warned that earthquakes are likely to ravage Ishikawa Prefecture for months to come after an emergency meeting of a government committee convened to assess two earthquakes that occurred in quick succession in the area facing the Sea of Japan.

“Seismic activity will continue for at least a few more months,” commission chairman Naoshi Hirata said at the June 20 meeting, which was held after a 5.0-magnitude aftershock within 24 hours of the 5.4-magnitude quake the previous day.
The meeting was held to discuss the possibilities of continuing seismic activity and its causes. Earthquakes have hit the Noto Peninsula in the prefecture since late 2020.
Six residents were injured in the June 19 earthquake, although no major damage was reported.
Hirata urged the audience to “make preparations” and stay alert for a similarly powerful shock in the coming days or weeks.
There has been intense earthquake activity in the area since around December 2020 and sharp ground uplifts have been confirmed.
Takuya Nishimura, associate professor at Kyoto University’s Disaster Prevention Research Institute, speculated that water rising from an oceanic plate deep under the Japanese archipelago is causing both terrestrial disturbances and earthquakes.
Referring to earthquakes that occurred from December 2020 to 2021, Nishimura said that rising waters put pressure on the underlying rocks, resulting in the earthquakes.
Although the pace of ground uplift has slowed in recent months, Nishimura said the water likely sank through fissures and other fissures in the rock, reducing the frictional forces that support the bedrock and cause earthquakes.
“Even if the introduction of water to the ground stops, it is difficult to predict what will happen next. So there is a good chance that a larger earthquake will occur in the area.
