An earthquake in eastern Afghanistan has killed at least 920 people, an Afghan official told a news briefing on Wednesday.

Sharafuddin Muslim, the Taliban’s deputy minister for disaster management, said the death toll was likely to rise.

“Unfortunately, last night a severe earthquake occurred in four districts of Paktika province, killing and injuring hundreds of our citizens and destroying dozens of homes,” Bilal Karimi, a local official, said on Twitter earlier.

“We urge all relief agencies to send teams to the area immediately to prevent further disaster,” Karimi said.

What do we know about the earthquake?

The 6.0-magnitude earthquake struck 44 km from the city of Khost, near the border with Pakistan.

Abdul Wahed Rayan, general manager of the Bakhtar news agency, said on Twitter that 90 homes had been destroyed.

It is believed that dozens of people are still trapped under the rubble.

The European Seismological Agency EMSC reported that 119 million people felt the quake tremor more than 500 km (310 mi) across Afghanistan, Pakistan and India, with an earthquake intensity of 6.1.

Franz Marti, a freelance journalist based in Afghanistan, told DW that residents were “already burying the dead while the search for survivors was still underway.”

Marty said he spoke on the phone with local residents who said that rain had begun in Bartikka, hampering rescue efforts.

A tribal elder from Jian District – one of the worst affected districts – told DW that local people are in dire need of urgent assistance.
