Afghanistan earthquake: death toll nears 1,000 destroyed villages

At least 920 people were killed in Afghanistan after the earthquake, which occurred in the early hours of Wednesday morning, with more than 600 injured, according to Reuters.

The earthquake struck about 44 km from Khost in southeastern Afghanistan just after 01:30 am local time. Most of the wounded and dead were sleeping in their homes. Several hundred homes have been destroyed and the death toll may rise, according to the head of the Afghan Taliban state, Hebatullah Akhundzadeh.

At a press conference, Afghan Deputy Minister for Disaster Management Sharafuddin Muslim said at least 920 people were killed and 600 injured.

The devastation caused by the earthquake included flattened villages. There were landslides and destroyed mud houses in the eastern province of Paktika, according to the BBC. “On every street you go, you hear people mourning the death of their loved ones. Houses have been destroyed,” a local journalist in Paktika state told the BBC.

Rescue operations are underway and the Taliban have called on aid agencies to help.

A violent earthquake hit four districts of Paktika State, killing and injuring hundreds of our compatriots and destroying dozens of homes. We urge all relief agencies to immediately send teams to the area to prevent further disasters,” tweeted Bilal Karimi, deputy spokesman for the Taliban government.

The Pakistan Meteorological Department said the quake had a magnitude of 6.1 and was also felt in neighboring Pakistan and India.

“My condolences and prayers are to the government and people of Afghanistan for the loss of life suffered by the earthquake. I have asked KP Govt to specially facilitate the provision of all medical aid,” wrote Imran Khan, former Prime Minister of Pakistan, who governs his political party in Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa or KP province of Pakistan which shares a border with Afghanistan.

Afghanistan is an earthquake-prone region, with more than 7,000 people over the past decade, according to the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs.
