At least 1,000 dead in Afghanistan earthquake: local reports

A powerful 5.9-magnitude earthquake on Wednesday killed at least 1,000 people in eastern Afghanistan, the highest death toll from an earthquake in decades, according to local reports.

“UNICEF is also distributing necessary aid, including kitchen equipment and hygiene items including soap, detergent, towels, sanitary pads, water buckets, warm clothes, shoes and blankets, as well as tents and tarpaulins,” he added.
