Biden assesses how to help Afghanistan after the earthquake

The White House said Wednesday that President Biden is working to respond to the devastating earthquake in eastern Afghanistan by assessing how US humanitarian assistance can meet immediate needs.

At least 1,000 people are believed to have died and nearly 1,000 were injured after a 5.9-magnitude earthquake hit the country on Tuesday. Transit fees are expected to rise.

“President Biden is monitoring developments and has directed USAID and other federal government partners to assess US response options to assist those most affected,” White House National Security Adviser Jake Sullivan said in a statement.

Our humanitarian partners are already providing medical care and shelter supplies on the ground. We are committed to continuing our support for the needs of the Afghan people as we stand with them during and after this terrible tragedy.”

The United States withdrew its military and diplomatic presence in Afghanistan in August 2021 in a messy and deadly operation, but provided $720 million in humanitarian aid between that time and March 2022.

Taliban fighters, hardline Islamists globally isolated since they seized control of the country amid the US withdrawal, are being denied access to that money, which is being handed over to humanitarian organizations and international organizations operating on the ground.

US funding includes emergency cash, shelter, trauma care and basic health services, water, sanitation, health assistance, protection and gender-based violence services, multi-sectoral assistance, assistance to refugees in neighboring countries, assistance to internally displaced persons and the return of Afghans to reintegration into the country , according to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

The devastation wrought by the earthquake comes on top of what the United Nations describes as one of the world’s worst humanitarian crises, with half the population, an estimated 20 million people, facing acute hunger, according to a UN report published in May.

While the United Nations has come a long way in relieving the food crisis, the ongoing drought and economic crisis are threatening the lives of people in the country.

UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres called for solidarity to help Afghans and said his organization was “fully mobilized”.
