UNHCR – UNHCR is deeply saddened by the loss of life and destruction caused by the earthquake in Afghanistan

GENEVA – UNHCR, the UN Refugee Agency, is deeply saddened to see the tragic effects of the deadly earthquake that struck Afghanistan this morning. Reports indicate that nearly 1,000 people have died so far and many more have been injured amid widespread devastation.

UNHCR has deployed staff to the worst affected areas of Paktika and Khost provinces from its field office in Gardez. The focus is currently on search and rescue operations to find survivors. There are fears that more lives could be lost if survivors are not reached urgently in remote areas of the country.

It appealed to the interim authorities for immediate humanitarian aid, and UNHCR is speeding up supplies and staff to help those affected, working with other humanitarian partners.

“It is heartbreaking to see this tragedy unfold in Afghanistan on top of the ongoing humanitarian crisis that Afghans go through every day,” said Filippo Grandi, the UN High Commissioner for Refugees. “I express my deepest condolences to the people of Afghanistan, especially those who lost friends and family in this horrific natural disaster. UNHCR stands by Afghans at this difficult time and will do everything in its power to provide relief to those affected.”

Afghanistan is going through a severe humanitarian crisis with some 3.5 million people displaced within the country. Millions more are struggling to survive amid rising levels of poverty and hunger, with social services under enormous pressure.

“This tragedy demonstrates once again that Afghans need and deserve the solidarity and support of the world,” Grandi added.

UNHCR has worked with Afghans over the past four decades within Afghanistan and neighboring countries. Nearly one million displaced Afghans and host communities have received assistance since January of this year.

All UNHCR staff in the country are counted.
