The United Nations is rushing to provide emergency shelter and food aid to remote areas of Afghanistan after a major earthquake struck the region, killing more than 1,000 people and injuring hundreds more. Pope Francis reassured Afghans of his prayers for the victims and made an appeal for help to all those affected.

The United Nations is rushing to provide emergency shelter and food aid to remote areas of Afghanistan after a major earthquake rocked the region, killing more than 1,000 people.

A powerful earthquake shook eastern Afghanistan in the border region with Pakistan on Wednesday evening. According to the latest reports, more than 1,000 people died in the disaster.

Pakistani authorities said the quake had a magnitude of 6.1. The US Seismological Survey (USGS) reported a magnitude of 5.9 followed by a slightly weaker aftershock.

Pope Francis said he was praying for the victims of the devastating earthquake in Afghanistan that killed more than 1,000 people and injured 1,500 others. He also issued an appeal…

The epicenter of the earthquake was about 50 km southwest of the city of Khost, near the border with Pakistan, at a depth of about 10 km.

The official Bakhtar news agency reported that at least 1,500 residents of eastern Afghanistan were injured after the quake.

Some international aid is provided primarily through international NGOs and the United Nations. The support is coordinated with the Taliban without recognizing the government.

Meanwhile, civil protection agencies fear that more victims could be found as rescue work is getting more difficult due to limited access to a remote mountainous area.

The hardline Islamist Taliban movement, which has once again ruled Afghanistan since August 2021, has called on aid organizations to provide support. Red Crescent aides arrived late on Wednesday.

According to the government, dozens of homes have been destroyed in Paktika and Khost states.
