Afghanistan, a country with a violent past and present, experienced an earthquake described as the deadliest in the past 20 years. According to several reports, nearly 1,000 people have lost their lives, and the death toll is expected to rise as more reports come in from remote areas.

Rescue assistance in Afghanistan

Adding to the tragedy, rescue assistance is unable to reach everyone trapped under the rubble due to areas cut off from the main cities. To make matters worse, heavy rain hampered rescue operations. Entire villages were destroyed.

The fact that Afghanistan has been embroiled in one of the most serious humanitarian crises in world history, this earthquake may be considered the wrath of God by some.

A lost child in Afghanistan

Amidst all the devastation, a heartbreaking image emerged – a young child without his parents covered in dust. In the photo the child is standing in front of a destroyed brick house.

“This little girl is probably the only surviving member of her family. Locals say they haven’t been able to find any surviving members of her family. She looks like a 3-year-old,” reads a comment on the tweet It was published by an Afghan journalist named Syed Zirmal Al-Hashemi.

Reports also suggest that things will only get worse in the Taliban-ruled country as there will be food shortages and a serious lack of access to rescue equipment. Other than those who died in the earthquake, there are many who are displaced and have nowhere to go.

“So many people have asked for donations and help. We are looking forward to finding and creating a way to help her and many other victims,” read a follow-up tweet by Syed. He also shared a GoFundMe page on the topic – “Currently, we’ve created a way to donate to victims. We’ll focus on finding and helping them later.”

People have taken to the comments section to express their grief and offer their condolences to Afghanistan. Of all the tweets, this one definitely stands out:
