Afghanistan earthquake: What we know so far, our response

On June 22, a strong earthquake of magnitude 5.9 struck southeastern Afghanistan, causing catastrophic damage and killing more than 1,000 people. It was the deadliest earthquake in 20 years. Neighboring Pakistan was also affected.

In response to the emergency, the International Rescue Committee (IRC) has deployed teams already operating in the area in the affected areas to provide critical medical and emergency support.

Afghanistan earthquake: what happened?

In the middle of the night of June 22, a deadly earthquake struck remote southeastern Afghanistan near the Pakistani border. The quake was felt as far as the capital, Kabul, about 100 miles north, but news of the disaster was slow to spread because important communications links were damaged.

The IRC is responding on the ground by deploying mobile health teams, working with authorities to provide support and cash assistance and assessing the area with OCHAAfg as the situation evolves.

More than 1,000 people were killed and dozens injured. At least 1,800 homes were destroyed, displacing thousands. The affected areas are among the poorest and most remote areas of the country. Many residents lived in mud houses that immediately collapsed.

Affected areas include Barmal, Ziruk, Nika and Gayan in Paktika Province, and Spera in Khost Province. According to reports, the Gayan district of Paktika state suffered the largest number of casualties, with 200 people killed and 100 injured, many of them seriously; 1,800 homes were destroyed or damaged, accounting for 70 percent of housing in the area. And in the Spira district of Khost province, at least 25 people were killed and 20 wounded.

What does this mean for the country?

Over the past nine months, Afghanistan’s health sector has been devastated by the withdrawal of important development funding. Last month, IRC staff at Paktia Regional Hospital, which serves the provinces of Khost, Logar, Paktia and Paktika, reported incidents of three babies sharing one incubator, and mothers standing in line carrying malnourished babies. Resources were already exhausted before the earthquake, and staff from the International Rescue Committee are reporting that local hospitals are full of injured survivors.

Since August last year, the economic crisis and the collapse of the banking sector have made it very difficult to get money into the country. Many local organizations that previously played a central role in providing services are no longer operating. International humanitarian organizations and the United Nations have expanded to meet the growing needs, but aid cannot replace state services.

The International Rescue Committee has been on the ground in Afghanistan for more than 30 years. Afghans make up nearly all of the country’s IRC staff and serve thousands of villages.

In response to the earthquake, the International Rescue Committee deployed two mobile health teams to provide basic first aid to the affected areas. Meanwhile, IRC teams are also providing cash support to families who have lost their homes and livelihoods.
