Taliban demands the unfreezing of bank funds after a deadly earthquake | Taliban news

Aid groups said the Taliban authorities have in the past tried to divert aid to areas and people who support their views.

The Afghan Taliban administration has called on international governments to undo the sanctions and unfreeze the country’s central bank assets as the country grapples with the aftermath of the earthquake that killed more than 1,000 people and displaced thousands this week.

While humanitarian aid continued to flow into Afghanistan, funds for the country’s long-term development stalled when the Taliban took control of the country last August.

Since then, the Afghan Central Bank’s reserves of billions of dollars have remained frozen abroad amid international sanctions against the Taliban government that have crippled the local banking sector and left the country’s new rulers with few reserves.

“The Islamic Emirate demands the world to give Afghans their basic right, which is their right to life, by lifting sanctions, unfreezing our assets and providing assistance,” said Abdul Qahar Balkhi, a spokesman for the Foreign Ministry. Reuters in an interview.

Balkhi said Afghans’ right to life-saving money should be a top priority.

The earthquake that hit the east of the country in the early hours of Wednesday morning damaged or destroyed 10,000 homes and injured nearly 2,000 people, straining the country’s fragile health system and posing a major test for the Taliban government.

Taliban vows not to interfere with aid

Aid organizations have complained that in the past, Taliban authorities have tried to divert aid to areas and people who support their views – or even confiscate goods to distribute themselves and claim credit.

Khan Muhammad Ahmad, a senior Taliban official in the hard-hit Paktika province, said international organizations helping with relief efforts would not interfere in them.

“Whether it’s the World Food Program or UNICEF or any other organization… the international community or the United Nations… they will distribute themselves,” Khan said.

“The responsible people from the Islamic Emirate are here… Our members will always be with them [to help]He added, referring to the Taliban’s new name for Afghanistan.

Emergency response teams stretched

Afghanistan is frequently subject to earthquakes, especially in the Hindu Kush mountain range, near the junction of the Eurasian and Indian tectonic plates.
