CAIRO/KABUL, June 26, 2022 – Hours after the devastating earthquake in Afghanistan on June 22 that killed more than 800 people, injured 1,400 and destroyed thousands of homes, the World Health Organization (WHO) has dispatched health teams, ambulances, surgical and surgical supplies, equipment and supplies. Other emergencies are to treat the wounded and replenish health supplies to hospitals in the affected districts of Paktika, Khost and Paktia.

“Every soul lost in this latest disaster facing the Afghan people is too many lives. It represents every life lost a mother, father, child, friend or neighbor of a person. Our response, and that of all health partners on earth, is to treat the wounded, save lives and reduce risk Death and disease in the wake of this tragedy. “We thank all partners for their concerted efforts and solidarity to help those affected,” said Dr. Ahmed Al-Mandhari, WHO Regional Director for the Eastern Mediterranean.

At the site, 8 ambulances and 20 mobile health teams provided by the World Health Organization helped transport victims and dead bodies from the affected areas to the nearest hospitals. A neurosurgeon, physicians, nurses, and a Trauma Officer have been deployed to support hospitals caring for the wounded and implement mass casualty management plans in the facilities.

WHO is also deploying mental health and psychosocial support experts to provide emergency counseling to earthquake-affected families.

Nearly 10 tons of medicines and medical supplies have been transported from Kabul to the affected provinces, enough to perform 5,400 surgeries and medical treatment for about 36,000 people over the next three months.

An additional shipment of health supplies is scheduled to arrive in the country from the World Health Organization’s logistics center in Dubai in the coming days.

The World Health Organization is increasing surveillance for infectious diseases such as acute watery diarrhea, measles and COVID-19 by deploying disease surveillance and control officials, and distributing medicines and supplies to health facilities in anticipation of an increase in cases.

Afghanistan is one of the two remaining polio endemic countries in the world. In addition to polio monitoring, polio staff also contribute to relief efforts and support surveillance for other infectious diseases.

“The earthquake was another tragic reminder of the various dangers facing the Afghan people and how dangerous it is for Afghanistan not to become another emergency forgotten by the global community,” said Dr. Daping Lu, WHO Representative in Afghanistan.

As the lead agency in the health cluster, WHO also coordinates the work of health partners to ensure gaps are identified and support is deployed as quickly as possible.

An inter-agency field mission, including experts from WHO, is on site to identify humanitarian needs, including health needs, and WHO and health partners will provide additional support as the situation evolves.
