A series of strong earthquakes occurred in Noto District, Ishikawa Prefecture.

The Noto Peninsula earthquake was smaller in size than the 7.3-magnitude Great Hanshin earthquake in 1995, but because its epicenter was shallow, the tremors were so strong in some areas that they knocked the torii gates of Shinto shrines.
