Doctors warn of women in dire need of care

In the next three months, 648 babies are in the third trimester of pregnancy or expected to be born, the UN Population Fund said.

Doctors in Afghanistan’s Eastern Province said women victims of the country’s most devastating earthquake, which killed at least 1,000 people, are in dire need of health care.

“Thousands of Afghans have lost everything in the earthquake, and pregnant women living in tents with no access to healthcare are particularly at risk.”

Even before the earthquake, in 2021, more than 80 percent of the country’s health care facilities were not operating normally due to lack of funding and shortages of medical staff and supplies.

According to the United Nations, Afghanistan has one of the highest maternal mortality rates in the world. 638 women die out of every 100,000 live births. Less than 60 percent of births are attended by skilled health professionals.

Of the 1,900 women who are currently pregnant, 648 are in the last trimester of pregnancy or expected to give birth in the next three months.

“Women of childbearing age, especially pregnant women, are in greater need of health care services, and the high number of infections and the low capacity of existing health facilities has led to increased demand,” said Zaim Abdul Rahman, media and communications analyst at UNFPA Afghanistan. for TRT World.

“But our mobile health teams and additional midwives deployed in the area are focused on providing maternal, reproductive and child health services.”

UNFPA initially distributed 10 clean birth kits to around 2,000 pregnant women to avoid fatal injuries.

The clean delivery kit contains basic supplies such as a plastic sheet, a blanket, sterile gloves, soap, a razor, and an umbilical cord tie.

Early this year, the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) appealed for $251.9 million in funding to respond to the reproductive health and psychosocial support needs of 9.2 million people. So far, the fund has received only 21 percent of the appeal.

Sanctions on Afghan government agencies and banks have cut off most direct aid to a country already facing a humanitarian crisis.

Although the United Nations and several other countries have sent aid to the affected area, Afghan Red Crescent Society Vice President Mullah Norddin Turabi said at a press conference in Kabul on Monday that the Afghan Red Crescent Society had no place to store food.
