Corded Emergency Response Team contacts earthquake survivors in Paktika Province, Afghanistan. We provide tents and blankets and we will help communities rebuild their livelihoods. “We are committed to providing assistance to families in this hard-to-reach area,” says Marco Savio, Corded’s Afghanistan Director.

On June 22, a 5.9-magnitude earthquake hit the provinces of Khost and Paktika in crisis-ridden Afghanistan. Aftershocks occurred on 24 June. The effect was devastating. So far, according to local media reports, the earthquake has killed more than a thousand people. It has infected more than 2,000 people and directly affected the lives of hundreds of thousands of Afghans. They urgently need medical care, food, medicine and shelter.

Among the worst-affected areas are Parmal and Jaen provinces. At the moment, there is no ongoing armed conflict, but the remoteness of this mountainous terrain makes it difficult to reach families in need.

Emergency response team on the ground

Shortly after the earthquake, the shocks of which can be felt in Kabul, Corded deployed an emergency response team to the Jayan district of Paktika province to assess needs and provide humanitarian assistance. “It was necessary to get there as quickly as possible,” Savio explains, especially given the fact that lines of communication with the isolated crisis area are down. Earthquake-affected communities are very poor. They live in areas scattered in hard-to-reach valleys and mountains, and have received very limited support over the past years.”

On the ground, Cordide is coordinating with other actors and humanitarian groups. The first result is that Cordide focuses on providing tents and blankets. We contribute €200,000 of our own funds to disaster relief activities, along with funding pledged by other partners.

This funding allows Cordaid to provide 300 affected families with a tent and five emergency blankets over the next few days. It will also be used to meet the other humanitarian needs of the affected people in the near future.

A call for support and solidarity

Caritas International calls on the international community to support Cordide’s response. In the Netherlands, Cordide launched a fundraising campaign to support earthquake victims in Afghanistan.
