El Cajon family mourns the “incomprehensible” loss of the deadly earthquake in Afghanistan

EL Cajon, California (KGTV) – An El Cajon family mourns an indomitable loss in the wake of the deadly earthquake that struck southeastern Afghanistan a week ago.

The 5.9-magnitude earthquake hit southeastern Afghanistan a week ago in the middle of the night. The death toll is now approaching 1,200.

In the hours that followed, Lamir Hamdard began to receive calls from the family who lived in a remote village in Jayan District, near the epicenter.

“I was really sad, I was crying,” Hamdard said.

The photos show what’s left of his uncle’s house, Khadi Zadran, which is located about three miles from the epicenter.

Zadran, his wife and seven children were asleep inside when the house was destroyed by the earthquake. Neighbors found a 5-year-old girl and a 6-year-old boy alive under the rubble.

They saved the two children. It was a miracle for everyone. “The rest of the family died, but the two children were alive,” said Waheeda Hamdard, Lallmir’s daughter.

Incredibly, in the following days, the news worsened.

“My father’s cousin, my mother’s cousin, and my cousins. He said Wahida.

Waheeda learned that about 20 homes belonging to her extended family had been destroyed.

“My heart burns. If we talk about the extended family, more than 80 members of our extended family died in this earthquake. Emotionally, it affects you in a way that you cannot even explain,” said Waheeda.

More than 150 members of her extended family were infected. They are all now homeless and sleeping outside.

International aid has arrived, but Waheeda says her family has no connections to receive aid.

“Families with connections… to the Taliban… they received a lot more help than other families,” Waheeda said.

Waheeda started a Gofundme campaign to raise money for food, medicine, clothes and blankets for her family.

The family welcomed the two children who survived the collapse of their home.
