A new 3.6-magnitude earthquake occurred in South Carolina

This is the second most powerful earthquake to hit central South Carolina on Wednesday.

COLOMBIA, South Carolina – Another earthquake shook most of the Midlands, just hours after another powerful earthquake shook the region.

The US Geological Survey says the 3.6-magnitude earthquake occurred at 7:03 p.m. Wednesday about 1.24 miles east of Elgin. It was only a tenth of a mile deep, too close to the surface for an earthquake to occur.

The USGS confirmed two aftershocks, both at 7:22 p.m. One was 1.5 on the scale and the other was 1.8 on the Richter scale. Minions happened at different times in the same minute.

It was the seventh earthquake that day.

This week saw 12 earthquakes.

News19 got reports of people feeling the quake throughout the central Midlands and near the Charlotte area. At WLTX we were on the air when the 3.6 earthquake hit and that moment was captured on air.

The aftershock is slightly stronger than the one that occurred just hours ago. The previous earthquake was a 3.5-magnitude earthquake that occurred at 2:43 p.m. in an area 3.2 miles east of Elgin. The USGS shake map has had more than 3,000 reports of how people are feeling it, with reports throughout Richland, Kershaw, and Lexington counties and as far north as Charlotte.

The Kershaw County Department of Emergency Management says the power outage in the area was caused by the earthquake. The earthquake triggered the switchboards which caused a power outage for a while.

Three much smaller aftershocks have also occurred.

Earthquakes occur all over the state but most are located near the coast. Approximately 70 percent of earthquakes occur in the coastal plain, and most of them occur in the Lowcountry.

Back in 1886, Charleston was hit by a catastrophic earthquake. Its strength was estimated at 7.3, and it was felt in faraway places, Cuba and New York. At least 60 people were killed, and thousands of buildings were damaged.

The structural damage extended hundreds of miles to cities in Alabama, Ohio, and Kentucky.

Geologists say Charleston is located in one of the most seismically active regions in the eastern United States.
