1.4 magnitude earthquake off the Estonian coast | News

The earthquake was recorded by the Finnish and Estonian Seismic Monitoring System in Aliklepa Bay, west of the Bakre Islands at 8:34 pm on June 28.

The site was identified as 59.284°N, 23.758°E (or X: 6571776, Y: 486206) at a depth of about four kilometers.

A 2.3 earthquake occurred on June 13 in a similar location. This was about 22 times greater than Tuesday’s aftershock, said Heidi Sosalu, a seismologist with the Estonian Geological Survey.

“Earthquakes can occur in a chain in which a larger event can be preceded by smaller aftershocks or followed by aftershocks. Such cases are rarely observed in Estonia,” she said.

The largest earthquake ever recorded in Estonia had a magnitude of 4.3 on October 25, 1976 in Osmosari.

The seismic magnitude scale says that earthquakes less than 2.5 cannot usually be felt and are only recorded by a seismograph. Tremors between 2.5 and 5.4 can often be felt but cause only minor damage.
