South Carolina experiences the longest series of earthquakes

Augusta, GA – South Carolina experiences perhaps the longest swarm of earthquakes within months of earthquakes centered in Elgin and sometimes as far away as Augusta.

The current swarm began on December 27 with a 3.3-magnitude earthquake centered near Elgin. Since then, 44 earthquakes on the Richter scale have occurred in the Elgin-Lugov region, the strongest with a magnitude of 3.6 on Wednesday.

Of the eight quakes in Palmetto state on Wednesday, some were felt in Augusta.

South Carolina has experienced thousands of earthquakes like these throughout the state’s history, according to geologist Scott Howard.

What makes these things unique is the length of time they occur.

“These earthquakes are now the longest series of earthquakes in modern history,” Howard said. “Unlike the earthquake swarms that occur elsewhere in the country, these swarms were low in size and posed no danger to people, fortunately.”

Seismologists do not believe that low-magnitude earthquakes are indicators of larger earthquakes to come.

The Piedmont fault system consists of several smaller fault lines that run through central South Carolina, according to Dr. Stephen C. Jaume, an expert at the College of Charleston.

“When an earthquake occurs in an area that has not had much activity over a long period of time, we can expect similar earthquakes to occur in that general area for the foreseeable future,” Jaume said.

These earthquakes have nothing to do with mining activity or any other human cause, according to both Howard and Jaume.

South Carolina Department of Emergency Management Director Kim Stinson said South Carolina has been at the epicenter of major earthquakes in the past.

“We all need to prepare for the possibility of a large-scale earthquake, however unlikely that may be,” said Stenson.

The epicenter of the largest earthquake ever recorded was along the East Coast outside Charleston on August 31, 1886. The 7.3-magnitude earthquake devastated the area and was felt by people from Chicago to Cuba.

Other notable earthquakes occurring in South Carolina include a 4.3-magnitude earthquake centered in Union County on January 1, 1913, and a 4.1-magnitude earthquake centered in Edgefield County on the night of February 14, 2014.
