SCEMD: The last earthquake swarm the longest in SC history

Columbia, South Carolina (WCBD) – The recent series of earthquakes in Kershaw County may be the longest consecutive period of activity in South Carolina’s history, according to geologists.

The South Carolina Department of Emergency Management (SCEMD) explained that “an earthquake swarm is a series of seismic events that occur in a local area in a relatively short period of time.”

The last swarm began on December 27, 2021 when a 3.3-magnitude earthquake was recorded near Elgin. 44 Richter scale earthquakes have occurred in the area since then, with a maximum magnitude of 3.6 on June 29, 2022.

Multiple earthquakes reported in South Carolina

The December 27 earthquake likely triggered the subsequent activity, explained Dr. Stephen Jaume from the Department of Environmental Geology and Geosciences at the College of Charleston.

“The Piedmont fault system consists of several smaller fault lines that run through central South Carolina,” he said. “When an earthquake occurs in an area that has not had significant activity over a long period of time, we can expect similar earthquakes to occur in that general area for the foreseeable future.”

State geologist Scott Howard said that this swarm differed from other swarms across the country because these earthquakes “were low in magnitude and posed no danger to people.”

Jaume and Howard agreed that the activity had nothing to do with mining or any other human activity.
