India sends 6 tons of medical aid to Afghanistan after earthquake

India has provided food aid of 35,000 metric tons of wheat to Afghanistan.

India delivered the seventh batch of medical aid to Afghanistan on Thursday consisting of 6 tons of essential medicines as part of its ongoing humanitarian aid.

The shipment was delivered to Indira Gandhi Hospital in Kabul.

“In light of the urgent appeals by the United Nations to help the Afghan people, India has so far provided 20 tons of medical assistance in seven batches, which include essential life-saving medicines, anti-tuberculosis medicines, 500,000 doses of Covid vaccine, etc. These medical shipments were delivered To the World Health Organization and the Indira Gandhi Children’s Hospital in Kabul.

“In order to ensure food security in Afghanistan, India has provided food aid of 35,000 metric tons of wheat,” she added.

Moreover, in the wake of the recent tragic earthquake, India, as the first responder, provided nearly 28 tons of earthquake relief aid in two relief flights. Relief shipments have been delivered to the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (UNOCHA), the United Nations World Food Program (WFP) and the Afghan Red Crescent Society (ARCS).

“Moreover, India is in the process of sending more medical and wheat aid to Afghanistan in coordination with the UN agencies on the ground,” the MEA statement said.

On June 22, a 5.9-magnitude earthquake struck parts of Afghanistan including the capital, Kabul, killing more than 1,000 people in Barmal and Jayan districts of Paktika province and Sabra district of Khost province.

In addition, at least 1,455 people were injured in three of the six worst-affected regions of Barmal, Jaén and Sibera – many of them seriously. More than 10,000 homes were destroyed.

Following this, India delivered the first shipment on June 23 to support the earthquake-affected Afghan nationals.

India has also deployed a team at the embassy in Kabul to coordinate the efforts of stakeholders to deliver humanitarian aid.

The Taliban welcomed India’s decision to return its technical team to continue humanitarian aid in Afghanistan.

Meanwhile, immediate humanitarian aid was sent to the affected areas on June 22, including 10 tons of medical supplies sufficient for 5,400 surgical operations and medical treatments covering 36,000 people for three months by the World Health Organization.
